Drift Through the Mangroves, Where Time Moves at Water's Pace
On the banks of the Madu Ganga – a shallow, island-dotted lagoon fringed with mangrove forests – lies one of the island’s most serene half-day experiences. This boat safari through the Madu Ganga wetlands, a Ramsar-designated site of ecological importance, offers a journey through tunnels of arching mangrove roots, past tiny temple islands, through shimmering water gardens and alongside the traditional stilt fishermen who have worked these waters for generations. The journey includes a visit to a cinnamon island, where local artisans demonstrate the skill and patience required to peel, curl and dry the inner bark of the cinnamon tree – a craft that Sri Lanka has practised and perfected for over 2,000 years.
